bamboo sheets washing instructions

How to care for bamboo sheets

Now that you own the softest sheets on the planet, we know you’ll want to take extra special care of them, because you’re in love. Just like any great love story though, the relationship between you and your bamboo has to be a two-way thing, so we’re here to share some extra tips with you on how to care for your bamboo sheets. The first thing to remember is that bamboo should be treated like any other delicate, natural fabric – because that’s what it is! Take a look at these washing instructions for bamboo sheets.

Wash in cold water only

We’re surprised by how many customers tell us that they only use cold water anyway, but we know there are a few of you who feel like not using warm water means you aren’t washing properly. Fear not, because bamboo actually has naturally antibacterial properties, making is much harder for bacteria and dust mites to build up. You’ll notice your sheets don’t get a smell (even if you’ve left it a little longer than usual to change…)

Only use delicate laundry detergents

Ok, so just because we told you to only wash in cold water, it doesn’t mean you need to ramp up the strength of your laundry detergent (cue Cold Power). Everyday detergents often contain optical brighteners, bleaches, chlorine and harsh stain removers. These can actually leave marks on your sheets or cause them to discolour, while damaging the fabric. We think a delicate wash works best (like a wool wash). A personal fave of ours is the Earth Choice Wool & Delicates Wash – it has a great eucalyptus base and is light on the hip pocket (only about $2 for a 2L bottle from most supermarkets!)

Stain removal

We realise there will be times where you have stubborn stains on your bamboo sheets and a delicate detergent just won’t cut it. Before you whip out the Sard or Napisan, try a non-chlorine based stain remover – you’d be surprised at how many options there are. Another good method is the tried and tested bicarb trick. Try making a paste, or adding this to your wash.

Choose a delicate cycle and wash bamboo sheets separately

We know it’s tempting to put sheets through a heavy duty wash with some other stuff, but they fare better if they’re washed kindly. Just select the delicate setting on your machine and at the risk of sounding like a broken record; remember to set the temperature to COLD. Also, bamboo sheets don’t like to share their wash time with anything else. Give them some space and let them have the machine to themselves, reducing the risk of rubbing or catching which potentially creates rips, hole or pilling.

Dry on delicate or on the line

Let’s be honest, stuff that comes out of the dryer is so soft and cuddly. Getting washing to dry in winter, especially when you have loads and loads to get through, is a challenge. The good news is, your bamboo sheets can go in the dryer, but make sure it’s a delicate setting and not super hot!

TIP: To save time in the dryer but still get that fluffy feeling, we like to hang our sheets until they’re at least 50% dry, then finish them off in the dryer.

Ironing

Some of you crazy people iron your bedding, and while you can't convince us that this is a good idea, we know you’re out there! So yes, you can iron your bamboo sheets but again, not on a hot setting or you’ll get that unsightly sheen and cause damage to the fabric. If you have a steam iron, streaming is definitely the most gentle and effective option. An even better option in our opinion is to take them out of the dryer and put them straight onto the bed. Any creases will easily relax out.

So there you have it! All you need to know to get the most out of your bamboo bedding and enjoy amazingly soft sheets.

    Hi Mulberry Threads
I have the Fog Grey stripe sheets which are gorgeous, and was wondering if you are going to do other colours in a stripe down the track?
    Thanks
    Julie
